Secretary Gabrielle Simpson (Audrey Hepburn) is hired by washed up screenwriter Richard Benson (William Holden) to type
up his latest opus as he dictates it. Most of the movie consists of dramatizations of segments of the absurd screenplay Benson is writing. It's
an international theft thriller in which Gabrille and Richard star, and they seem at times to be quite aware that they're in a movie.
On the side, Benson romances Simpson. He thinks it's just a fling to him, but when she falls in love with him, he finds himself responding in kind.
Eventually, he admits he wants to be more than a hack. The dialogue is snappy (such as one sequence where they're purportedly talking about the
characters in the screenplay, but are obviously really talking about themselves), some really funny moments, and great performances and chemistry from the leads.
Paris When It Sizzles is nothing special, but it's solid writing and great acting make it perfectly good entertainment.
